Deputy Ward was one of Sheriff Will Teasle's deputies in the Hope, Washington sheriff's department. He was played by Chris Mulkey and is one of the three tertiary antagonists in First Blood.
First Blood[]
Ward was first seen taking a gun from fellow Deputy Mitch for the purposes of evidence while John Rambo was being booked. Following this, Ward was tasked with taking Rambo's fingerprints. Ward got angry at Rambo's stubborn refusal to let him take his fingerprints easily. Ward's superior Galt threatened to break Rambo's hand. This disturbance drew the attention of their boss, Sheriff Will Teasle who told Rambo he was facing 90 days in jail coupled with a $250 fine.
After Rambo was hosed down, Ward was in charge of shaving Rambo dry with a straight razor despite of the fact that this was not necessary, he went along with it. While having a PTSD flashback showing a Vietnamese soldier doing almost the exact same thing Ward is doing, Rambo fears for his life and fought Ward as well as the other deputies off and escaped into the woods with his knife.
When Ward went to hunt him down with the other deputies, Rambo jumped on him from a tree and dislocated his right shoulder with a tug and a punch, badly injuring but not killing him. Deputy Balford shot at Rambo, but he jumped out of the way and Ward was shot in the same shoulder. Ward was the second deputy to be dispatched in the forest ambush, his fate is unknown.
Personality[]
Ward was as malicious as his superiors Sheriff Will Teasle and Deputy Sergeant Art Galt. Unlike his more levelheaded colleague Deputy Mitch, Ward made no effort to be civil towards John Rambo and delighted in tormenting Rambo. It can be presumed that Ward was influenced by Galt.
