The AKMS is an underfolding, scaled-down variant of the AKM, which in turn, is an updated version of the AK-47.
It is a copy of the older AKS-47, which was an underfolding AK-47.

The AKMS has been seen in every Rambo film after First Blood. The AKMS is first seen seen carried by the Soviet Army in both Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo III.'' It has also been seen with the Mujhaideen fighters and John Rambo.
A variety of AKMS under-folder type rifles (not the Norinco Type 56-1) are seen in the hands of the Tatmadaw Army. Myint, of the Karen rebel army, also is seen carrying a customized, shortened AKMS in Rambo. Coincidentally, this same gun is famous among action films, as it has been seen in many films such as True Lies and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.
