The smaller mocked-up Gazelle next to the large Hind gunship.

The Aérospatiale SA 341 Gazelle was a helicopter used by the Soviets in Rambo III.

Rambo III[]

The Gazelle is different from the more commonly seen Hind gunship  because it had short and stubby wings on which only two rocket pods with machine guns were mounted. The Gazelle was much smaller than the Hind and had a more gangly frame, allowing for easier maneuverability and lighter weight. The Gazelle was seen alongside Colonel Zaitsev's Hind as it flew through the mountains of Afghanistan and approached the Mujahideen camp in Khost. The Gazelle fired on the soldiers but didn't kill as many as the Hind did. Rambo later destroys the Gazelle with a 12.7mm DShK heavy machine gun. He later encounters another Gazelle in the Afghan mountains. Rambo screws an explosive arrow tip  onto to the end of one of his fiberglass arrows, assembles his compound bow and rushes to the top of a peak where he draws the string back and launches the arrow directly into the chopper, stunning the pilot. It destroys the chopper immediately.

Make and Model[]

It is unknown what gunship the Gazelle is supposed to resemble, as the Aérospatiale helicopters were never used by the Soviet army. The Aérospatiale Puma is a stand in for the Mil-Mi-24 Hind gunship, but it is unknown what the mocked-up Gazelle is supposed to be a stand-in for.

Trivia[]

  • In Chapter 1 of Rambo (Sega), SA 341 gazelle, who appeared as boss, was wrongly changed to UH-1 helicopter. It is not known whether it was the negligence of developers or the fact that SA 341 gazelle had to be avoided due to copyright.
