The Soviet Army was the army of Soviet Union (USSR). It is nicknamed the "Red" or "Russian" army often. The Spetsnaz and their Vietnamese Army allies are the main antagonists in Rambo: First Blood Part II and the Soviet Army itself is the main antagonist of Rambo III.
The Spetsnaz (literally meaning Special Purpose Forces) is like the Green Berets of Russia.
The Soviet Union drafted its male citizens for military duty. All Soviet citizens, Russian or not, were required to serve in the military, particularly Afghanistan in the 1980s. Ukrainians, Kazahks, Georgians, etc. were required to serve in the Soviet Army since they were Soviet citizens. The USSR prided itself for it's large and powerful military.
